The painting belongs to the body of work Underpainting, conceived for a solo show held in 2019 in the Albert Van Dyck Museum, Schilde (Antwerp).
The exhibition was envisioned as an ideal exchange with the painter Albert Van Dyck (1902-1951), one of the masters of Belgian animism, and it developed as an investigation of Flemish landscape. Untitled (Underpainting) stays as a stratified system, in which landscape is destructured in a condition of ambiguity between abstraction and representation. Nature is therefore explored as a pretext to affirm an art-historical continuity of the act of painting.
The aim is to seize the internal tension of phenomena by acting a condensation of the lived space, which gets possible by means of the filter of memory. The horizontal interruption of the pictorial surface allows for an objectification of the painting, establishing a dialogue between the “image” and the “picture”.
