Sergio Salomone
Sergio Salomone was born in Rome in 1983. He lives and works in Turin.
His artistic research focuses on the physical qualities of the material, he studies its methods of communication and visual language. In particular, the GRATA series is composed of photographic portraits covered with an ornament of plastic pins. The latter, known to the collective imagination for being used in a children’s game, are positioned on the photographic portrait according to an ornamental plot that interposes between the observer and the observed.
The use of the structural element of the grid is derived from the confessional plots of the Christian monastic churches as well as from Islamic culture, where it is used by the Mashrabiya ornamental technique, according to which, whoever is behind the screened opening of the grid can observe the outside, but not vice versa.
