James Busby was born in 1973 in Rock Hill (South Carolina) and he currently lives and works in Chaplin, South Carolina. In 2003 he achieved the Master in Fine Arts Virginia Commonwealth University.

His artistic research is focused on manual skill, a legacy of Costructivism: in order to better explore the reality of a work he returns to the origin of painting. Busby is at pains to ensure his creations represent nothing other than their own materiality.

The works are the result of a long and rigorous process: most of the times a painting starts with a wooden support. Gesso is carefully brushed onto the surface and layers are built up slowly. Once the surface has the desired thickness the sanding process begins: a process characterized by executive rigor and which gives a texture effect.

The works of James Busby are open works; the reflective quality alters the perception of space, obliging the viewer to move. The works themselves offer a virtually infinite number of experiences, a new one created every time a reflection changes.

Several exhibitions have been dedicated to James Bubsy, among the solo exhibitions we can remember: Talking in Code, New Paintings and Drawings (2015) at Reyonolds Gallery a Richmond and Life Around Here (2016) at Kravets|Wheby Gallery in New York. In April 2019 he participated at the double show Aftermodernism A perspective on contemporary Art James Bubsy Justin Samson at Mucciaccia Contemporary. He of the artistic current Aftermodernism founded by the collector Hubert Neumann. There were dedicated to him several exhibitions in London, Paris, Stockholm and Istanbul. He participated in various art fairs in Miami, Houston, Stockholm, Istanbul and New York City, among which the International Army Show in New York, the Untitled Art Fair, the Scope NY and the Untitled Art Fair, Miami.
